First Generations Review: NZGamer.com

Tuesday 31st May 2011 | 4:35 pm UK time | Categories

The first review (that I’ve found) of The Sims 3 Generations has been posted online, and it’s very positive: NZGamer.com has rated it an “Excellent” 9.0 out of 10:

It brings new humour, new methods of interaction, and a much more fleshed-out portrayal of personality for your Sims. In fact, it can be argued that this is the desert-island expansion pack; the pack you’d choose if you could only pick one. If you own the Sims 3 you need to buy Generations.

Thus begins my reviews coverage: as usual, every day for the next month or so I’ll post one news post about any that I’ve found (no new reviews, no news post) – reviews will however be posted immediately to the Reviews tab with that update of course noted on the Updates page, just in case that’s not quick or frequent enough for you.

Pornographic Pictures Found On TheSims3.com – FOX 5 News

Saturday 28th May 2011 | 9:04 pm UK time | Categories

Pornographic pictures have been found on TheSims3.com according to a report on FOX 5 News (the link below the player came with the embed code):

Pornographic Pictures Found on ‘The Sims 3’ Website: MyFoxDC.com

According to comments posted on the article (click the link above), the pictures are being posted on the forums and the exchange by one person, who is also apparently trying to persuade other people to commit suicide. Comments also allege that EA are not doing very much to tackle the problem. Troubling.

Will Wright Discusses How The Sims Came About In Interview

Saturday 28th May 2011 | 1:15 am UK time | Categories

Shortly after Will Wright’s departure from EA, Tristan Donovan conducted an interview with him for his book “Replay” – a history of the game industry. The interview has finally been published on the internet, and it has some quite fascinating information about how The Sims came to be:

I’ve read that home design software was the inspiration.

WW: I was always interested in architecture, and so one of the original things that was a really inspiration for The Sims was this book, A Pattern Language, by Christopher Alexander. He’s very much into trying to apply formula. He’s a physics guy that went into architecture and was frustrated because architecture wasn’t enough of a science. But at the same time, he’s got a very interesting humanist side. He felt all the principles of architecture should be clearly reducible back to fundamental principles, which is what he kind of tries to do in that book.

Read the interview from the beginning via the first link, or skip to the second question on page 4 via the second link if you want to go straight to the discussion of The Sims:

Generations: New Mysterious Mr. Gnome Features Detailed, Plus New Screenshots And Launch Trailer

Friday 27th May 2011 | 11:00 pm UK time | Categories

EA has posted details of a new aging and family system for The Mysterious Mr. Gnome, that they are introducing in The Sims 3 Generations:

In The Sims 3 Generations, you can now have a gnome family! The Mysterious Mr. Gnome you know and love from base game will age through the life cycles just like the Sims. Leave two of these magical gnomes in your Sims’ homes or have them hang around a wedding and you just might see a new magical addition! Each of the different gnome age ranges has new poses and appearances, and they each prefer to appear near different objects that are suitable to them.

Toddler Gnome – Gnomes are already small, but these magical toddlers are tiny!
Child Gnome – These playful little gnomes are just a little bigger than toddlers.
Teen Gnome – These teenaged gnomes have the look of youth and rebellious teen spirit!
Elder Gnome – Gnomes past their primes, but still just as magical.

Friday 20th May 2011 | 8:59 pm UK time | Categories

EA UK has posted another The Sims 3 Generations feature on their The Sims 3 Facebook page, this one focusing on pranks, punishments and proms:

Do you have unruly young Sims who seem to always cause trouble? Is it time for your Sim’s parents to take control? Well, those rebellious Sims can now be punished for all the headaches and heartache they cause at home and around the neighbourhood. Fighting with their siblings, missing school, and pulling pranks are just a few of the things that can get a young Sim in trouble.

GamesRadar Gets Hands-On With Generations

Friday 20th May 2011 | 2:03 pm UK time | Categories

GamesRadar has posted a new hands-on preview of The Sims 3 Generations:

Generations is one of the more robust expansions in the franchise, especially when it comes to the teenage characters, and it definitely looks to bring out their rebellious side. The new ability to pull off pranks epitomizes the naughty teen years – sometimes you just want to leave a flaming bag on the doorstep of a nearby household.

The article includes two new screenshots (well, five new screenshots as one of the images is four-in-one) which you can also view on the Screenshots tab if you prefer.

Saturday 14th May 2011 | 5:54 pm UK time | Categories

Another Renault electric car has been made available to download for free from The Sims 3 Store. This time it’s the Fluence Z.E., which is a bit more traditional looking than the last one. Once again, the offer is “void” in the US and Canada, and unless you’ve changed your locale on the website, the link below won’t work if you’re in one of those countries.
