Poll Results: Which is your favourite profession in The Sims 3 Ambitions?

Saturday 7th August 2010 | 7:51 pm UK time | Categories

Yes, it’s true – your eyes are not deceiving you. I really am closing a poll without extending it once. And it’s thanks to you lot for actually bothering to vote in good time. So thank you.

Right, yes – results. I asked you this: Which is your favourite profession in The Sims 3 Ambitions? There was a tie – both Stylist and Investigator got about 17%. Meanwhile 26% are still unsure whether to actually get Ambitions or not. Click below to see the results in full and comment on them:
 > Full Results

If a poll has ended, another must have begun, and so it has. What I want to know this time is whether anyone else thinks that the name of the newest expansion pack, The Sims 3 Late Night, sounds like it should have “Stuff” at the end. I’ve nearly called it The Sims 3 Late Night Stuff in the past, and have seen another website go further and actually publish a news article calling it that. So, vote to the right of any page – it’s a simple yes or no with this one.

New The Sims 3 Game Update Stops Sims Walking On Water

Thursday 8th July 2010 | 11:00 pm UK time | Categories

EA has released a new The Sims 3 game update, fixing a lot of issues, including these:

  • Dead relatives will no longer appear alive in your Sims’ family trees while traveling to Egypt, China, or France
  • Sketches your Sims create using the Drafting Table are now valued properly based on your Sim’s Painting Skill Level and related Profession Level
  • Sims will no longer walk on water to view paintings placed on swimming pool walls
  • Fixed an “Error 13” issue caused by saving the game immediately before having your Sim give another Sim a makeover
  • Ghost Hunter Sims can no longer “Show Off Banshee Banisher” to child Sims
  • Fixed issue that prevented players from Changing Active Household while in Edit Town mode

Before you rush off to install it though, there’s some extra steps that may need to be taken, on top of the usual ones. As usual EA have forgotten about Windows Vista and Windows 7 and provided file paths that only apply to Windows XP – the path to the The Sims 3 folder in Windows Vista and Windows 7 is C:\Users\[User name]\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 (the Documents folder appears as My Documents in Windows 7, but this path is still correct). For the extra special steps, the full list of changes, and the usual steps (in that order), click below then find the post titled “Game Update for: 1.14/2.9/3.5/4.2”:

Ambitions Reviews Wrap-Up

Monday 5th July 2010 | 5:13 pm UK time | Categories

It’s been a month since The Sims 3 Ambitions was released, and reviews seem to have pretty much stopped, so I think now is a good time to wrap-up my reviews coverage. I won’t post any more articles about reviews here, but you can still see if I’ve found any as I’ll continue to add them to the Reviews tab – changes that’ll of course be noted on the Updates page.

The Metascore is currently 75 based on 17 reviews, but I think it’s unlikely to change much in the event more are added. This is worse than World Adventures, which got a ‘score of 81, and the base game, which got a ‘score of 86. This is also worse than most The Sims 2 expansion packs, with only Bon Voyage and FreeTime getting lower ‘scores than Ambitions (Apartment Life drew).

The Ranking at GameRankings currently stands at 78.58%. That’s based on six reviews but probably won’t change that much if they find any more. This is lower than World Adventures’s Ranking, which stands at 82.78%, and the base game’s, which is 86.90%. Comparing it to The Sims 2 expansion packs, this is a better Ranking than the ones attained by the Nightlife, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage and FreeTime, but worser than the ones attained by University, Open for Business (it’s semi-equivilent) and Apartment Life.

Click read more (or if you’re already on the full article page, scroll down a bit) for links to all the games and expansion packs mentioned on Metacritic and GameRankings. Where it wasn’t specified above, the Metascore or Ranking attained is provided in the link text.

Latest Ambitions Reviews: EL33TONLINE

Tuesday 29th June 2010 | 11:54 pm UK time | Categories

EL33TONLINE rated The Sims 3 Ambitions three out of five, a score described as “Good!”, in tonight’s only review:

Yes, EA did a great job in making your Sim’s career more interactive, but at the same time turned it into a chore. When the line between my real job and my Sim’s job begins to blur, it’s time to stop playing!

Latest Ambitions Reviews: GamesRadar

Friday 25th June 2010 | 11:57 pm UK time | Categories

Just for a change I’ve only got one The Sims 3 Ambitions review for you tonight, but it is from a pretty major gaming website! GamesRadar gave it seven out of 10, a score described as “good”:

It’s certainly one of the meatier expansions in the franchise’s history in terms of sheer gameplay benefits, but it may segment its audience a bit too much, as not every profession will be enjoyable for every player.

 > The Sims 3 Ambitions review at GamesRadar

The Metascore has gone down a point to 75 (based on 17 reviews), mainly thanks to a non-English website giving it a score equivalent to 40, which is pretty bad. The Ranking at GameRankings on the other hand remains unchanged at 78.58% based on six reviews.

Latest Ambitions Reviews: Spawn Kill

Tuesday 22nd June 2010 | 11:11 pm UK time | Categories

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that I’ve only got one new The Sims 3 Ambitions review for you tonight – Spawn Kill gave it a not-very-good 6.5 out of 10:

While the town of Twinbook is lovely and a lot of fun to explore, there isn’t much fun to be had by playing the careers for more than an hour or two. It’s definitely worth playing if you are already a huge Sims fan, but there is a certain amount of much-needed depth missing.

There have been no changes with either The Ranking at GameRankings or the Metascore, which remain at 78.58% based on six reviews and 76 based on 14 reviews respectively.

Latest Ambitions Reviews: Den of Geek

Friday 18th June 2010 | 11:49 pm UK time | Categories

Well, so much for almost-daily posts – this may be the first The Sims 3 Ambitions reviews post in a week, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got a load for you – just the one, in fact. Den of Geek rate it four stars out of five:

For now, though, I am willing to have faith that any of those little niggles will be smoothed out by a patch and the game itself will continue to go from strength to strength.

The Metascore is still 76, based on 14 reviews, but The Ranking at GameRankings has gone down a little to 78.58%, based on six reviews.

Latest Ambitions Reviews: Game Chronicles, You?

Friday 11th June 2010 | 11:33 pm UK time | Categories

Just one review again for The Sims 3 Ambitions from the critics tonight, but of more interest to me is what you think. You can now rate and review Ambitions over on the Reviews tab – just log in with your Google, Yahoo!, AIM, Twitter, NetLog or OpenID account, select your star rating, then type away!

Game Chronicles gave it a pretty-darn good 8.0 out of 10:

In short, The Sims 3 Ambitions is a fine specimen of a Sims expansion that introduces fresh, fan-requested gameplay options to the core game, as well as many smaller tweaks that make the game more fun as a whole.

That review contained six new screenshots, which you can of course also view over on the Screenshots tab.

The Metascore remains at 76, now based on 11 reviews, while The Ranking at GameRankings has gone up slightly to 79.38%, based on four reviews.

Apple Features Ambitions

Friday 11th June 2010 | 4:43 pm UK time | Categories

As with The Sims 3, World Adventures and Design & High-Tech Stuff (High-End Loft Stuff), Apple has posted a feature about The Sims 3 Ambitions:

What do your Sims do while they’re at work all day? Previously, you could only choose a career and make a few basic decisions to nudge their jobs in certain directions, but now with the Sims 3 expansion pack Ambitions, you can follow your Sims as they fight fires, hunt ghosts, investigate mysteries, and more.
