Previews
Here's all the previews and features I've found for The
Sims 3 Pets on the web collected together in
one place:
The Sims 3: Pets is a worthy addition to the franchise's
contemporary generation, and it walks a comfortable
middle line between the wacky pet careers of The Sims 2:
Pets and the disappointing animals found in The Sims:
Unleashed. Here, almost everything works as it should,
and the pets themselves add a dose of realism that
probably should have shipped with the first game in
2009.
While there have been Pets releases for
previous core editions of The Sims, The
Sims 3 Pets illustrates how the game's developers
have yet to run out of ideas for the franchise.
The pets expansions for the Sims have traditionally been
the most, well, expansive, introducing players to a new
emotional vocabulary through the unconditional and
universally appreciated love of captive animals. The
Sims 3: Pets is the most balanced of these expansions –
more pragmatic than the wackiness of The Sims 2
superstar mutts, and… well, I doubt you even remember
the awful state of The Sims 1’s autistic, grid-based
dogs. It’s the only Sims expansion I’d ever insist upon,
and a must for Sims 3 owners.
The extra level of interactions that Pets provide
changes the way you play the Sims… again. This is by no
means a bad thing as it keeps things fresh. The game you
end up with after all the expansions is now a very
different experience, and in my opinion a much more
complete and fuller game.
If you’ve been dying to let your Sims play with a puppy
or learn to ride a horse, or stare at a snake for an
hour, then this is the expansion pack for you. If you’re
a casual player, there may not be enough here to warrant
the purchase, nor will it particularly suck you in.
There's really no other way to put it. The Sims 3: Pets
is the best expansion released since the series first
launched in 2009. Trust me. I’m a horse and I know what
I’m talking about. Even non-horses will enjoy hearing
their steed’s gentle clip-clops as you trot through
Appaloosa Plains and explore it from the perspective of
a pet.
My overall experience with Pets was outstanding. A week
straight of it and I’m still going to be playing it
avidly. Having played every expansion since the very
first release in 2000, I am quite the addict. There are
very few things I would change if I could; adding more
items and clothing for the actual Sims is one, and maybe
pet clothing? If you are a fan of the Sims, or ever
wanted to digitally sniff someone, I do encourage you to
pick up this expansion and start making your pet
masterpieces today!
That aside, Sims 3 Pets offers a
plethora of new addictions to the already awesome
Sims franchise. If you’re a
Sims geek, I strongly suggest you ditch your
friends, grab a copy of Sims 3 Pets and
kiss the outdoors goodbye. You'll be gone for a while.
In summary, The Sims 3: Pets is proof that EA
hasn't run out of ideas for new creative content just
yet. There was a very real danger that this expansion
could have been a stale offering since it's the third of
its kind, but the addition of horses is a game-changer,
and the option to take full control of your pets
breathes new life into the experience. It's questionable
how much mileage we're going to get from The Sims 3
from here on in, but this one will keep the fans happy
for some time.
After The Sims 3: Generations and The Sims Medieval:
Pirates & Nobles, I was wondering if EA was out of ideas
and had lost its touch with Sims expansions. Thankfully,
The Sims 3: Pets puts the series and franchise back on
track and continues to make its virtual worlds even more
fleshed out. As always, this expansion isn't going to
make any non-Sims player a convert, but if you're still
enjoying your digital families, this is a good expansion
to pick up.
The Sims 3: Pets is well thought out, well
executed and a whole lot of fun. It’s evident that
the people at EA responsible for putting this pack
together put a lot of thought into the animals
featured, giving dogs, cats and horses their own
purposes within the game and including traits and
behaviors that are amusingly similar to those of
real animals.
